Remember Who Was There When Your Feelings Got Big

When you were small, the people closest to you showed you what happens to a feeling once it gets big.

If someone stayed with you until it eased, you learned that big feelings pass.

If nobody had room for it, you learned to handle it on your own and keep it out of sight.

Why Your Tighter Grip Keeps Making It Worse

Anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and major life transitions all ask more of you than you were meant to handle alone.

So you end up overwhelmed: your thoughts and feelings flood in faster than you can sort them, and the harder you try to get a grip, the more defeating it gets.

The people you love feel it too, because the pattern that keeps a feeling locked inside keeps them at arm’s length.

What was learned in relationship gets relearned in relationship.

Let the Old Pattern Show Up Where It Has Room to Change

I’ll start by getting the full picture, with the diagnosis as one piece of it: your history, your goals and what you most want to be different, so we can shape the work around you.

Healing, as I see it, happens inside relationships that feel safe and connected, and ours is meant to be one: a room where you’re heard and understood without judgment.

Whatever you learned about big feelings will come into that room with you, in the apology for crying or the habit of telling me the hardest part with a laugh so it lands lighter.

Psychodynamic therapy helps us notice that pattern while it’s still warm, and attachment theory shows why you learned to steady yourself that way, which makes the old habit easier to forgive.

Find Out What Your Feelings Do When Someone Stays

With Emotionally Focused Therapy, we slow down and stay with a feeling as it rises in session, and each time it peaks and eases with someone right there, a little more of that steadiness has a chance to become yours.

Family systems thinking widens the lens to the role you were handed growing up, the one who stayed out of the way or kept everything running, so you can see which reactions belong to that old job.

Cognitive-behavioral tools give you something practical between sessions: ways to catch the thought that tips a feeling over and bring yourself back down.

Knowing why a feeling hits makes it easier to steady, and steadying it gives you room to look at why.

Take That Steadiness Into the Rest of Your Life

I hope the steadiness you build with me begins to show up when you’re on your own, at home and in the conversations you used to dread.

Relief from the symptoms that brought you in is part of it.

Underneath that relief, you come to know yourself better, recover faster when life knocks you sideways, and let the people you love come closer.

Wholeness, in the end, looks like a life with room in it for every feeling you have.

Bring Me the Feeling That Gets Too Big

Call me at (856) 395-9536 or email aliveandwelltherapy@gmail.com and ask for a free initial phone consultation.

Use that call however helps you decide, whether that’s describing what’s going on or asking how I work.

I see adults 25 and older in person at my office in Blackwood, New Jersey, and online throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Whatever feeling you’ve been keeping out of sight, there’s room for it here.

Bring Your House Back Together

A house divided against itself can’t stand. You’ve been living inside the proof of that for a while now, and somewhere along the way you stopped expecting the rest of the sentence to be true.

The rest of it is true. A house with two people standing on the same side of it will hold up under things that would have flattened it before. That is the whole aim of the work: get the two of you on the same team, and then let the two of you go after the actual problem.

When you and I talk, I’ll tell you plainly what I make of it. I’d rather be useful to you than agreeable.
