BIPOC-Focused Care

Nobody Ever Told You Whether This Belongs in Therapy

You’ve never had reason to ask a therapist whether your race, your family’s history and your faith are supposed to come up in the work itself, or whether they sit off to one side of it.

They’re already in it, because they were shaping you long before the problem you came in about arrived.

What your family did with anger, what got praised in your house, what your faith taught you about how much a person absorbs before saying something: all of it went in early, and none of it asked your permission.

Respect Alone Won’t Move What You’re Feeling

Identity gets talked about as something to be respected, and that’s true as far as it goes.

Respect by itself doesn’t change what happens in you when your mother says a certain thing in a certain tone.

Why Your Reactions Still Hold

Those reactions hold because they were learned as a way of getting through one particular house, with particular expectations about who you’d be for everyone in it.

That’s what makes them workable.

The work is more specific than a conversation about culture.

We’ll Follow Your Reaction Back to the House It Came From

Psychodynamic therapy is the practice of following a present-day reaction back to the arrangement that first taught it to you.

So when you tell me what your sister said at the funeral, I’ll be listening for the older version of that sentence.

Somewhere in the tracing, culture stops being a topic and turns specific: a grandmother’s standard, a rule about what the family shows outsiders, a lesson about what’s owed and what’s never asked for in return.

Where Your Faith Fits

If faith is part of how you were raised, it belongs in that tracing with everything else.

You decide how much room it takes.

What I Won’t Assume About You

Being a woman of color, I know something about how difference gets handled inside a family and outside one.

I don’t know yours yet, and I’d rather ask than guess.

Where Your Frustration Turns Out to Be Cultural

With couples, what gets treated as a communication problem is two people following instructions issued by two different families.

One of you was raised where trouble gets said out loud.

The other was raised where going quiet is what respect looks like, and each of you has been reading the other as the difficulty.

What You Each Brought In

I use EFT, Gottman theory, family systems and narrative therapy here to get at the expectations about family, trust and intimacy that each of you arrived with.

What You’ll Stop Having to Work Around

Once you can both see the instruction the other one is following, your frustration loses its personal edge.

The argument gets shorter, because you’re finally arguing about the disagreement instead of about each other.

On your own side of it, the reactions that have never made sense start to, and a reaction you understand is one you can do something with.

Tell Me What Brought You Here

Before anything else, I’d want one conversation with you about what’s been happening and what you’d want therapy to reach.

That conversation is free.

The office number is (856) 395-9536, and my email is aliveandwelltherapy@gmail.com.

I’ll treat your culture, your family and your faith as part of the clinical work from that first conversation forward, and I’ll tell you straight if I’m not the right fit for what you need.

Bring Your House Back Together

A house divided against itself can’t stand. You’ve been living inside the proof of that for a while now, and somewhere along the way you stopped expecting the rest of the sentence to be true.

The rest of it is true. A house with two people standing on the same side of it will hold up under things that would have flattened it before. That is the whole aim of the work: get the two of you on the same team, and then let the two of you go after the actual problem.

When you and I talk, I’ll tell you plainly what I make of it. I’d rather be useful to you than agreeable.
